As one of the signature participating events of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) – by far the largest and most ambitious gathering on sustainability in the Middle East –, the International Water Summit (IWS) is a unique global platform for promoting water sustainability in arid regions. IWS brings together world leaders, field experts, academic luminaries and business innovators to accelerate the development of new sustainable strategies and technologies. When it comes to making the most of the planet’s scarce water resources, all new ideas are welcome. And some will have the potential to transform our use and conservation of this most vital commodity. At IWS 2015, the search was on to find them.

In its debut outing, this ground-breaking new initiative, Innovate@IWS, offered technologists from across the worldwide water industry, the chance to showcase their ideas to an expert panel of end users, technologists and investors in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

“Innovate@IWS is designed to close the gap between technology development and commercialization across the clean technology value chain and is also a platform that allows regional municipalities and utilities to understand the impact and potential of technologies that may have been deployed in other arid parts of the world” said Stuart Moss, managing director of ISLE Utilities, the UK-based technology and innovation consultancy that co-organized the competition.

Prior to IWS, 12 finalists were selected in three water categories – municipal, industrial and real estate. Given its wastewater heat recovery system could offer a viable water as well as energy saving solution for any of these sectors, Thermowatt entered its cooling technology in all three categories of the competition and was preselected in the Water for Real-Estate.

In addition to earning a booth to exhibit at the Innovation Pavilion during IWS from 19th-22nd of January, the preselected company representatives were also brought before a panel of judges representing high-level expertise in water technology across the MENA region, in a “Dragon’s Den” style competition to determine the most promising technologies for enhancing water security in arid regions. The winning technologies would demonstrate excellence in three key areas: uniqueness, business potential and long term vision.

Judges in the Water for Real-Estate category were:

  • Stella Thomas (founder and managing director of Global Water Fund),
  • Dr. Bruce Walker Ferguson (professor of practice – engineering systems and management, head of the Institute Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at MASDAR Institute),
  • Søren Hvilshøj (International Water Director at Ramboll)
  • Mohamed Al Marar (partner at Gateway to Abu Dhabi, Government)

The winners were announced by Stuart Moss and Prof. Bruce Ferguson of the Masdar Institute during the closing ceremony and we are proud to report, that in the Water for Real-Estate Sector, THERMOWATT Ltd. was called to accept the winner’s award.

It was a great honour to win amongst all the other great companies that presented at the competition. Being included provided us an amazing opportunity not only to showcase and acquire wider awareness of the possibilities of implementation of the THERMOWATT solution but also to make valuable connections, and to initiate promising co-operation with different stakeholders in the industry.
